Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

A Pelvic Health Physiotherapist treats pelvic pain and issues so you can get back to enjoying an active and healthy lifestyle.

The pelvis can take a lot of load throughout our lives, but if we start to experience pelvic pain or other issues it can significantly impact our overall wellbeing. A Pelvic Health Physiotherapist is trained to diagnose and treat pelvic concerns. This may include problems with bladder or bowel incontinence, your hormonal health or post-surgery issues; pain around the pelvis or lower back during normal every day activities, work related activities, or exercise. These issues can be very common and treatable.

During pregnancy a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist is able to assess pelvic floor function. They can work with you to re-train your pelvic health and reduce risk of pelvic complications throughout pregnancy. It’s also good to know that ACC now cover a wide range of injuries women may receive after giving birth.

Pelvic Health conditions we treat

Pelvic Health physiotherapists have undertaken post-graduate training in the assessment and treatment of pelvic health patients in clinical practice. This enables us to provide individualised treatment for the following concerns:

  • Maternal birth injuries
  • Pelvic Floor dysfunction
  • Bladder and Bowel problems such as incontinence, leakage, urgency and constipation
  • Painful sex
  • Lower back and sacroiliac pain
  • Weaker abdominal muscles after pregnancy, birth or surgery
  • Diastasis Recti (abdominal wall separation)
  • Prolapse management
  • Post-birth WOF (usually 6-8 weeks after birth to assess pelvic floor function, and give education and advice particularly around activity and exercise modification
  • Pre-Birth or preparing for birth plan in regards to appropriate pelvic floor and core strengthening.

What to expect from a Pelvic Health Physio Session

If you are experiencing any of the issues above, talk to us about booking a Pelvic Health Physiotherapy Session.

Your session is a chance to discuss the issues you are having and talk through your personal medical history, and history of this injury, along with the goals you would like to achieve by coming to a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist.

Your physiotherapist will complete a thorough functional assessment of your body, which would ideally involve an internal examination to correctly assess your Pelvic Floor function and strength, as well as looking at your pelvic and postural alignment. You as a patient are in complete control of the assessment at all times and have the right to refuse any part of the assessment or treatment if you wish.

Education and management strategies will then be given in conjunction with a diagnosis. This will help empower you to feel at ease with the rehabilitation process, to modify lifestyle if necessary, and therefore reduce load placed on the pelvis. An individualised pelvic floor physiotherapy program will be administered, tailored to your own body’s needs. As well as onward referral if appropriate.
